The True Cost of CPAP Therapy: Comparing Sleep Lab vs Home Sleep Test

When it comes to diagnosing sleep apnea, two main options exist in Ontario:

  1. Polysomnography (PSG) at a Sleep Lab
  2. Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)

Both methods have their place, and both play an important role in helping patients find answers to snoring, fatigue, and poor sleep. At SleepEZ Home Health, we work alongside both options—because what matters most is helping you get tested, diagnosed, and treated quickly so you can get back to living life fully rested.

Sleep Labs (Polysomnography – PSG)

What it is: An overnight, in-lab study where you are monitored by technicians using multiple sensors (EEG brain waves, oxygen, breathing effort, limb movement, ECG).

Cost in Ontario: Fully funded by OHIP (taxes). Patients do not pay for the test itself.

Wait times: Depending on demand, patients may wait 6 months to over 1 year for a lab-based study in Ottawa and across Ontario.

Best for: Complex sleep disorders (narcolepsy, parasomnias, suspected central sleep apnea) or when HSAT results are inconclusive.

Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT)

What it is: A simplified diagnostic test done at home, typically measuring airflow, oxygen levels, breathing effort, and snoring.

Use across Canada: Widely accepted nationally as the first-and-last line diagnostic tool for sleep-disordered breathing (obstructive sleep apnea).

Cost in Ontario: The industry standard is over $300 CAD. At SleepEZ Home Health, we prioritize patient care and have set the cost at $155.00—cut in half to help patients access faster diagnostics and, if clinically indicated, start therapy without unnecessary delays.

Best for: Patients with suspected sleep apnea based on symptoms such as loud snoring, daytime fatigue, or witnessed apneas.

Serving Quebec & Out-Of-Province patients too: Can’t make it into our Ottawa clinics? We also provide virtual testing appointments for out-of-province residents and ship the Home Sleep Test unit directly to your door. From diagnosis to treatment options, SleepEZ makes care accessible no matter where you are.

The Cost of CPAP Therapy in Ontario

Once diagnosed, treatment often involves CPAP therapy. Here’s how the costs break down in Ontario:

Government (ADP) funding: Covers 75% of a CPAP machine (approx. $415.50), but only when prescribed after a sleep lab (PSG) test.

HSAT patients: Currently, ADP does not cover the $415.50 portion of a CPAP machine prescribed solely through HSAT.

Private insurance: At SleepEZ, we work directly with your insurer to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses for therapy supplies and accessories. We’ll walk you through your coverage, handle direct billing when available, and ensure you’re not paying more than necessary.

Across other provinces: In Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Labrador, there is no ADP government funding program. In these provinces, private insurance may cover the entire cost of CPAP therapy, which can range between $1,450–$2,300 CAD depending on the machine and setup.

The Reality of Wait Times

In Ottawa and across Ontario, sleep lab wait times can be 6 months to over a year. That means patients with loud snoring, oxygen drops, or severe fatigue may be left untreated for months while waiting for their spot.

At SleepEZ Home Health, we help patients start CPAP therapy sooner:

We can initiate treatment based on HSAT results while patients wait for their PSG sleep study.

This means you get relief from symptoms and protection from the risks of untreated sleep apnea right away, while still qualifying for government funding once the full PSG is completed.

For Quebec patients, this means you can also begin therapy without long delays, with our team supporting you from virtual testing through to ongoing CPAP setup and supplies.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Choose Sleep Lab (PSG) if: you have complex and extensive health symptoms, your doctor suspects more than obstructive sleep apnea, or you want OHIP-funded diagnostics and are able to wait for up to over 1 year.

Choose HSAT if: you want fast, affordable access to sleep apnea screening & testing, live in Ottawa, the Valley, or Quebec, and want to begin the process of treatment without a year-long wait.

The good news is both paths are valid—and they can even work together.
