Understanding Oxygen Delivery

Pulse-dose vs continuous-flow oxygen

Portable and stationary oxygen concentrators do not all deliver oxygen in the same way. Understanding the difference is important when comparing equipment.

Pulse-Dose Oxygen

Pulse-dose concentrators detect the beginning of an inhalation and deliver a measured bolus of oxygen during the breath.

Portable concentrators such as the Inogen Rove 4 and Inogen Rove 6 use pulse-dose oxygen delivery.

Continuous-Flow Oxygen

Continuous-flow concentrators deliver oxygen continuously at the prescribed litres-per-minute setting.

The Inogen At Home, Inogen VOXI 5, Yuwell 5L and Yuwell 10L are stationary continuous-flow systems.

Important: A pulse-dose setting such as “2” is not the same measurement as 2 L/min of continuous-flow oxygen. Settings should not be assumed to be equivalent between manufacturers or between pulse-dose and continuous-flow equipment. Oxygen equipment should be used according to the user's prescription and healthcare provider recommendations.
Respiratory Therapy Support

Is your oxygen therapy keeping up?

Oxygen needs may change with activity and sleep. SleepEZ Home Health provides respiratory assessment services that can help evaluate oxygen saturation under real-world conditions and support communication with your healthcare team.

6-Minute Walk & Ambulation Assessment

Oxygen saturation can be monitored during walking or activity to assess how effectively the prescribed oxygen setup supports the user while moving.

This can be useful when evaluating portable oxygen equipment, activity tolerance or whether additional discussion with the prescribing provider may be appropriate.

Overnight Oximetry

Overnight pulse oximetry records oxygen saturation and pulse rate during sleep and can help identify periods of nocturnal oxygen desaturation.

SleepEZ can incorporate oximetry into respiratory follow-up when clinically appropriate.

Travel Oxygen

Travelling with a portable oxygen concentrator

Portable oxygen concentrators can make travel significantly easier than relying solely on traditional oxygen cylinders. Inogen's Rove 4 and Rove 6 are designed for portable use and meet FAA acceptance criteria for carriage and use aboard aircraft.

Before travelling, users should confirm the airline's current medical-device requirements and ensure adequate battery capacity is available for the full travel period, including connections and possible delays.

Battery Planning

We can help review standard versus extended batteries, charging options, expected travel duration and backup power planning.

Accessories & Power

AC supplies, DC vehicle power, external battery chargers, carrying bags, backpacks, cannulas and replacement parts can all affect how practical an oxygen system is while travelling.

Prescription oxygen is medical therapy. SleepEZ can provide equipment education and respiratory support, but oxygen flow settings and clinical oxygen requirements should follow the user's prescription and treating healthcare provider.
Oxygen Therapy FAQ

Frequently asked questions about oxygen concentrators

Common questions about portable oxygen concentrators, home oxygen, continuous flow, pulse dose, travel and equipment support.

What is an oxygen concentrator?
An oxygen concentrator draws room air into the device, separates nitrogen from the surrounding air and delivers concentrated oxygen to the user. Unlike compressed oxygen cylinders, a concentrator continually produces oxygen while it has an appropriate power source.
What is the difference between a portable and stationary oxygen concentrator?
Portable oxygen concentrators are designed around mobility and typically use rechargeable batteries. Stationary concentrators are intended primarily for home or facility use and commonly provide continuous-flow oxygen from an AC power source.
What is the difference between pulse-dose and continuous-flow oxygen?
Pulse-dose systems deliver oxygen when the unit detects inhalation. Continuous-flow systems deliver oxygen continuously at the prescribed litres-per-minute rate. The two methods should not be treated as equivalent.
Is a pulse setting of 2 the same as 2 litres per minute?
No. A pulse-dose setting is not the same measurement as litres per minute of continuous flow. Pulse settings can also vary between different manufacturers and models.
What is the lightest Inogen portable oxygen concentrator?
The Inogen Rove 4 weighs approximately 2.9 pounds with its standard battery, making it substantially lighter than the larger Rove 6.
What is the difference between the Inogen Rove 4 and Rove 6?
The Rove 4 prioritizes minimum weight and provides pulse settings 1 through 4. The larger Rove 6 offers pulse settings 1 through 6, higher maximum oxygen output and greater available battery runtime with its extended battery.
Can I fly with the Inogen Rove 4 or Rove 6?
Inogen states that both systems meet FAA acceptance criteria for carriage and use aboard aircraft. Travellers should still confirm the airline's current requirements before departure and carry sufficient approved battery capacity for the trip.
How long does an Inogen battery last?
Battery duration depends on the concentrator model, battery size, selected flow setting, breathing rate, battery age and operating conditions. Published maximum runtimes are therefore not guaranteed real-world runtimes.
What is a 5 LPM oxygen concentrator?
A 5 LPM oxygen concentrator is capable of delivering continuous oxygen up to approximately five litres per minute. Examples include the Inogen VOXI 5, Inogen At Home and Yuwell 5 L/min systems.
When might a 10 LPM concentrator be required?
A 10 L/min concentrator provides greater continuous-flow capability than a standard 5 L/min system. The appropriate oxygen flow should always be determined by the user's prescription and healthcare provider.
Can a portable oxygen concentrator be used while sleeping?
Suitability depends on the specific device, delivery mode, the user's breathing pattern and prescription. Users should not assume that a portable pulse-dose system is automatically appropriate for overnight oxygen use.
Does SleepEZ provide oxygen concentrators in Ottawa?
Yes. SleepEZ Home Health is based in the Ottawa region and provides appointment-based respiratory services and oxygen-equipment support for clients in Ottawa and surrounding communities.
Can SleepEZ ship oxygen equipment across Canada?
Eligible oxygen concentrators, accessories and respiratory equipment can be purchased online for delivery across Canada. Availability and shipping requirements vary by product.
Does SleepEZ ship oxygen concentrators to the United States?
Select eligible respiratory products may be available to U.S. customers. International availability can vary according to the manufacturer, prescription requirements, product restrictions and destination regulations.
Can a Respiratory Therapist help me compare oxygen concentrators?
Yes. SleepEZ Registered Respiratory Therapists can help explain equipment specifications, pulse versus continuous flow, batteries, portability, accessories and practical equipment considerations. Clinical oxygen settings remain based on the user's prescription and treating healthcare provider.
